MG MGB Technical - Early fuel tanks

I have a 67 B that until today had a locking gas cap. After I filled the tank at the service station I went to replace the locking cap. The cap broke and some of the parts when down the filler pipe. I am not sure how small all of the parts are that when down the tank. Does the fuel pick-up pipe in the tank have a screen? I am not concered about getting any metal parts in the engine, but I am concerned about getting small screws or other small metal parts sucked into the fuel pump.

Jim,

Yes there is a mesh screen on the fuel pick-up in a MK1 tank.

Jim-
Cliff is right about the Original Equipment fuel tank having a protective screen, but the hard question is: after all these years, has the original fuel tank been replaced by a previous owner? One way to tell is to look and see if it has a drain plug. The cheaper reproduction tanks don't have this feature, and they often don't have the screen, either. It's the same old story of "you get what you pay for." Look in the middle of the forward end of the bottom of the tank for a pressed-in bulge. That's where the plug should be.

The PO replaced the tank the year before I bought the car. The replacement tank was from Moss. He also replaced the sending unit at the same time. Does anyone know if the Moss tanks sold in the past two years had a screen on the fuel pick-up? I plan to remove the sending unit when the tank is empty and get the metal parts out. It would be alot easier if I could burn the gas (fun to) instead of finding several five gallon tanks to drain the gas tank.

Any bits such as screws will not pass through the fuel pump screen. So, the only problem may be they could plug up the fuel line, decrease fuel flow, and cause carb mixture problems (lean).

To empty the tank use the fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb, stick fuel line in a can, and turn on the key, but don't crank. Empty can into another vehicle.

I called Moss and their tech support department told me that the tank would have a screen on the fuel pick-up. So I am going to just drive the car untill the tank is near empty and hope all is well. Should be easy to get the parts out through the sending unit hole once the tank is empty.
