MG MGB Technical - Electrical problem (and solution!)

I have just replaced the wiper rack on my 1964 MGB. When I had finished, the charging light stayed on glowing brighter with higer revs, the full beam light stayed on also glowing brighter with higher revs and the headlights refused to work.

I spent a lot of time looking at the wiring diagram, the fuses and the control box, trying to work out what I had done wrong. It turned out that I had missed one of the earth connections when I bolted the wiper mounting plate back on. I understand that current was flowing through the missing earth, through the high beam light and earthing through the headlights but how could that be connected to the charge light? The charge light is ballanced between the control box and the switched side of the ignition switch.

The moral of the story is: if there's something wierd with the electrics, the first place to look is the earth connection.

The *real* moral of the story is to go back and look at again at what you have been doing :o)

Several oddities there, as well as the charge light the full beam tell-tale should only have glowed when either the wipers were trying to park and/or the panel lights were on, and the headlights themselves shouldn't have been affected as they (should) have a different ground.
