MG MGB Technical - Embarassing clutch fork question

I am reassembling the gearbox and release bearing but I now, rather embarassingly, can't remember which way the clutch fork goes back on. I assume that you want the fork so that it pushes on the release bearing when the clutch is pushed in and the spring clips (that hold the bearing to the arm) are against the bearing when the clutch is released? I can't find a picture anywhere that makes this obvious.

Yes, I also managed to lose the little plunger and spring at the bottom of the gearstick and the little plastic bush thing!

Hey, it's my first time doing this stuff so I think I get to make these mistakes just the once :)

The top of the clutch fork has two
"hooks" that the release bearing sits in.
The open side of these hooks should face towards
the engine when the release lever is mounted
properly. The clips are rotated to the rear
of the fork (away from the engine) to secure
the release bearing.

in the proper orientation.

The fork is mounted with the open ends where the bearing spiggots fit in facing towards the clutch thrust pad.There are two types of retaining clips one type is a coil spring that pushes into a drilled hole in the end of the bearing spiggot, the other is the more common "L" shaped one made out of spring steel,this type slips over the bearing spiggots then swings over and registers in an indent in the back of the clutch fork. It's a good idea to put some grease on the spiggots before fitting them into the forks. Hope this all makes sense, if you need any more help you can always email me

Looks as though Ronald answered your question a few minutes before me, but I forgot to put my email address in in case I can be of any more help. Incidently, if you do need to get spares from the UK a good firm to deal with is MG Beehive, Moss Motors tend to be more expensive with their spares. Paul Walbran who used to live somewhere in the region of Blockhouse Bay or the Waitakeries used to import parts from the UK if he is still around, should be in the Auckland phone book

Thanks guys, that's what I needed. That was the way that made most sense to me. But I've noticed on these cars that what makes sense isn't always how things are done!

Hi Harry, yep Paul Walbran is about. I am lucky in that I have him and another mg specialist not far from me and they both can get parts from the UK.
