MG MGB Technical - Engine mounts/steering removal
Hi all, In the process of replace bad motor mounts on my 77 B and have come across and snag (how odd!). I'm going to have to remove the steering rack to put the driver's side mount nut on and I have found info in the archives on what needs removed and all. My problem is, how do I remove the bolts holding the steering to each spindle of the front wheels. I have the nuts off (on the bottom) and I figuered I could just push the bolt up and get it out. No go. I have the other bolts out that neeed to be removed out so only those 2 bolts are keeping me from removing the steering. Neither manual I have has any good pictures or info. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks. Joe |

I've replaced the left hand motor mount on my '78 B without removing the rack. It involved "thinning down" an open-end wrench (spanner) (I THINK it is a 5/8") and turning the nut one flat at a time until I could spin it (or the motor mount) more freely. Re-installation is the time-comsuming reverse. Hope this helps. rick |

Joe, If I understand correctly, your issue is that you cannot remove the tie rod? To remove tie rod, hit the vertical, forward most face of the hole the tie rod is in--smartly with a hammer. It'll pop right out. The bolt is tappered fit and thus, all the pushing from the bottom will never work. Just smack it with a BFH! Paul |

And if you don't fancy that, just undo the two bolts holding the arm to the stub axle and swing the whole lot free. |

I second Chris' solution. It's fast and easy with no real chance of damaging the tie rod ends. Removing the rack is the easiest way I've found to replace the motor mounts. Just make sure to witness mark where the steering pinion enters the U-joint. That way your steering wheel will remain centered. Good luck. Tom |

Thanks. Already got the nut off using thin wrench but want to make things easier putting it back on the driver's side so I want to remove the steering rack. Paul, not sure where you mean to hit to loosen it. I loosened the nut on bottom of the tie rod end so I could disconnect it from the wheel and lift the steering assembly out. That is where I can't get it to budge. If you look at Moss Motors diagram of the steering I loosened number 17 and want to lift number 15 off the wheel. Joe |

Joe, Look straight on the the metal hole the tie rod bolt is in. That round hole has a top--where the bolt goes in. It has a bottom where the bolt comes out. It also has a forward face that's looking straight at you--the vertical thickness that seperates where the bolt goes in and where the bolt comes out. Smack that face and the bolt will pop out. Hard to describe and visualize but once you see it you'll go, "duh"! Paul |
