MG MGB Technical - Exhaust Advice

Have a relatively stock 79 MGB save for a austin marina manifold which allows use of my single carb with the older style exhaust (pre 74). Eventually hope to have head port/polished per Burgess but am in need of new exhaust now. Am contemplating the Falcon SS systems. Should I get there stock one or go with the large bore? Any input from those out there that have a large bore system on an non modified engine would be welcome.
Frank

My engine is only slightly modified and I have the Peco header and exhaust. I'm happy with the performance and it sounds great. Peco now makes a SS system

Frank, I installed the Falcon SS big bore exhaust system on my 68 GT before rebuilding my engine, don't know that it helped performance, if it did the difference was small. It didn't hurt performance and the sound is nice. I have installed the system on both my MG's and they fit well and are not difficult to install. Both cars now have Mike Brown heads and the exhaust works very well with the modified heads, I assume it would work well with a Peter Burgess head. It may not be the best system you can buy for performance, but I don't know that anyone has run dyno
comparison tests on the available systems for MG. The only other exhaust I have tried on an MG is the Walker stock replacement and I will never buy another one of those.

Thanks for your replies..Clifton one concern I have with the single rear muffler is clearance...seems I read in archives that it is a close fit. I have a Panhard rod that fits fine with my stock system...is the rear muffler wider and longer than stock or just wider?
Frank

Frank, It is bigger in diameter but I didn't compare the length with a srock muffler. I just measured the Falcon on my 74 and it is 18" long, 5 15/16" diameter and has about 5 5/8" clearance from the rear of the shock bracket to the front of the muffler. If your panhard doesn't extend behind the handbrake cable it should be ok. The slip joint between the center pipe and the pipe on the muffler has more overlap than is required so you can probably slide it back 1/2"- 1" and trim the end below the bumper if you need more clearance. Let me know if you need more measurements. Clofton

Clifton: My '79 MG-B roadstr has a Peco header and a catalytic converter. Does the Falcon system install without too much fuss given this set up??

cheers

Gary. I'm not sure, my cars are 68 and 74. I know that there is a Falcon SS big bore system for for 75 to 80 cars but I don't know if it fits with your set up, perhaps Bob Thompson will come in with an answer. Regards, Clifton

Good morning guys;
I would go with the early big bore system asuming your Marina manifold is one with the duel oultets like an early B. You won't buy a sweeter system. I have sold four this year alone. Bob

Bob & Clifton: Thanx for responding. I guess my question would be, does the Falcon replacement start at the rear of the catalytic converter and go out to the rear? If you have any info on this system I would appreciate knowing

Thanx again in advance

cheers

The Falcon system for 75-on MGBs starts at
the rear of the cat converter and goes to the
tailpipe. That is, it assumes you have the
stock (or replacement) cat.

Sounds like the Marina manifold might work with
the Falcon system for pre-75 Bs.
Ronald

Ok, it sounds as if the Falcon system would work. Next I need to know where to buy this and $$$$.

Again, many thanx

cheers,

Hi Frank
A little off topic but how do you like the Marina setup?
Did you notice any difference in performance? Are you using the ZS carb? What air filter are you using?I'm thinking of doing this to my '79 B and any info would be appreciated! Also where did you get the Marina manifold and is it a "74?
Thanks Pat
