MG MGB Technical - exhaust problems
Driving home yesterday, the exhaust on my b roadster got a lot louder! it had split at the rear of small "bomb" silencer in middle of system, seeing as I was 1/2 mile from home, I gave it some and enjoyed the sound! seriously though, I now need to fix it, can I remove the centre box and replace with straight pipe, or will it be too noisy? otherwise, does anyone on here have a cheap exhaust system in their garage, preferably near to the midlands (UK) or even just the centre section, as I want my car back on the road asap and preferably with christmas looming as cheaply as possible! Thanks John |

John. You do not mention the year of your car. On my 68 GT, I was constantly dragging the center muffler. After reading Peter Burgess' excellent book, I had the local custom exhaust shop replace the center muffler with a straight pipe and never regretted the choice. Later, to test out the concept, I replaced the exhaust system with the Peco "Big Bore" system to see if it was, actually, easier to install on a CB car than it was on an RB car. It was much easier (i.e. possible without lifting the engine to allow the header to be fitted). But, the original exhaust system worked just fine with the center muffler removed and a straight pipe replacing it. Les |

Hi, thanks for info, forgot to say that its a 78 mgb roadster on rubber bumpers, John |

John, For a cheap used system try eBay. I recently broke a 70 BGT and the exhaust was almost new and went for just £5! Iain 67 BGT |

I removed mine and the sound is good, it runs better, it does not bottom out - I should have done it from the start. That center muffler is a waste of time |

Take out the centre piece. I have had many compliments on my sound since i took mine off Ken 70 B |

John- Upon simply removing the front muffler (silencer) from a very mildly tuned engine and replacing it with a length of tubing it will then be noted that the exhaust note becomes deeper. This is because the function of the middle muffler (silencer) is to dampen bass note frequencies, while that of the rear one is to dampen the higher frequencies that give the exhaust a rasping tenor. |
