MG MGB Technical - Fan cut in temperature
I have fitted an electric fan to my 1974 mgb roadster. It is controlled by an adjustable kenlow thermostat. Does anyone know what temperature I should have it set to come on at? Temperature would be measured by putting a jam themometer in the open radiator cap. Thanks in advance David |

Mine is set for a little over 90*C |

The factory gauges come on between the two little dots right on the edge of the temp gauge face plate about half-way between N and H, which is about 90C as Steve says. However many owners are petrified about seeing their gauges go over N and set the fan way too low which can result in the fan continuing to run after the system has cooled enough to start closing the stat, which then causes more grief as the owner wonders why the fan won't switch off. |

Thanks Steve and Paul. As mine is a 74 car and did not have an electric fan when new it may not have the dots if they were put there to enable a test of the fan cut in. Its good to know approx what position the 90 degrees corespons to on the gauge. It also helps to give a fix on the gauge's accuracy. David |

My 73 has the dots, albeit on a (at least one) replacement gauge. But since UK spec cars only got the electric fan after (77) the separate oil and temp gauges (76) I suspect it was always the case. |

Anytime that I've fitted a Kenlowe I've simply made a mental note of the temp. gauge position when running normally with the production fan and then adjusted the Kenlowe to cut in at the same point. I've never had any problems arising from this crude "rule of thumb". |
