MG MGB Technical - Fenders don't seam to fit.

I am reconstructing a '65, pull handle MGB. I have instaled a new front frame section from a '71 car. We drilled out all the spot welds along the frame/floor of the '71 and added it to the '65 car. Now fitting the fenders (wings)we have the rear point by the windscreen posts lined up flush at the rear edge of the scuttle and the fit at the door edge is correct. The front of the fender and bonnet also match.
We still have a 3/8" gap where the fender and scuttle curve inward to meet the corner of the bonnet.
Could the fender be made different in this area from '65 to '71? My body man suggested adding metel to the scuttle to meet the edge of the fender under the joint strip.
I also need to check if the holes at the bottom of the fender for the two screws line up.
Any thought on this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Geoff

Do you have pictures maybe to kick start our thoughts?

Is the gap only on the angled bit, or all around where the wing top seam meets the scuttle edge?

If it's just the angled part, then this area is covered by your dash top/scuttle top material. If everything else lines up, 3/8 here isn't as much as it sounds and will unlikely be a problem. Everything has various tolerances and all added up, gaps like this can appear in certain places. The area I think you describe is certainly one i've had gaps in before on some of the cars i've done. Use a bit of packing material down the gap with hole(s) drilled so the wing securing bolt(s) can go through, then seamseal over it and put the scuttle/dashtop material over that.

If it's all the length of the seam from bonnet corner to the edge of the inner scuttle...well somethings gone wrong someplace!

We are spoiled with our pressed panels. I have had to fiddle about with some and thought it was poor until I found out that low volume panels made on a wheeling machine are guaranteed to be no more than a starting point.

Geoff,

Moss (USA) groups front wings as 1962 - 1968, and 1969 - 1974. Not sure of any physical differences other than possibly turn indicators?

When I put new wings on our '74 B/GT my source had one from Rover, and one from Steelcraft. The one from Steelcraft was a much better fit.
