MG MGB Technical - First Time MGB Buyer
Hello Everyone, I have recently been looking at a 1971 MGB at a local dealer. I have had many sports cars before and currently own an older Carrera. Would people be so kind as to tell me pitfalls of purchasing an early 70s MGB other than the obvious. For instance, are they particularly subject to rust in areas not easily spotted, transmission problems, or anything else that I could focus on during a test drive and subsequent inspection (without tearing the car apart). Thanks very much in advance. -Joe |

B's are known for rust in the sills, (rocker panels to us Yanks), look for evidence of filler around that area and in the floorpans. There are a couple of articles about buying MGB's but I can't find the links right now. Search the archives for these, or buy Lindsey Porters guide to mgb restoration for a checklist. I don't know that the 71 has any particular mechanical quirks, other than the obvious oil burning, look for at least 50 psi oil pressure at speed, 20 at idle. As everyone will tell you, get a rust free car if you can find it, mechanically these cars are simple and parts readily available. Good luck, Bud |

Joe - where in NJ are you? If in the Sussex County area I have some experts you can take the car to for "review" ED |
