MG MGB Technical - Fitting an electric aerial

I've managed to get hold of a Jaguar remote drive electric aerial. I plan to fit this in the rear wing of my '71 mgb roadster, replacing the current whip style aerial.

As you can see from the photographs, the attachment that comes with the aerial is designed to fit on a near horizontal panel.

The wing of the MGB is quite steep - the protractor in the image suggests 60 degrees.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to the best way to fit the aerial? I was thinking of getting an adapter from a scrap yard for a car that has a similar 60+degree mounting angle.

Does anybody know which cars I should look out for or have any good ideas?

Your help is much appreciated,

James.

Hi James

Back in the late 1970s I fitted a Radiomobile electric aerial to the rear wing of my MGB GT, exactly as you wish to do. The aerial came with a number of fixings, one of which was for a steeply banked wing such as on the XJ6. In fact, Radiomobile supplied the same kit to Jaguar dealers for the very purpose.

Might I suggest that you take a wander around a number of local scrap yards and look for any XJ6 as I think that you will find what you are looking for. You only need the wing fitting, obviously.

I also fitted the remote motor inside the spare well on the panel beside the spare wheel. You will position it on the offside panel according to your photograph.

If you hadn't already got the hole in the rear wing I'd say fit it in the front wing instead behind the splash-panel. I know 'they' say fit it diagonally opposite the ignition, but most MGBs probably have them in the front wing and it isn't an issue. Unless there is something wrong with your ignition, aerial or radio.

Thanks for your suggestions.

After hunting around scrap yards this weekend, I found that the old shape Vauxhall Astra has a suitable (60 degree) aerial gasket.

I adapted the Jaguar aerial and combined it with the Astra gasket. The result is a very neat looking electric aerial. The Astra gasket is black rubber so I may make a polished stainless cover but for the time being, I'm very happy with the results.
