MG MGB Technical - Fitting Speakers

Can anyone give me some advice on fitting speakers to a 79 BGT. I've seen them in the footwell sides, doors, or even on the rear seat! If the doors are the way to go, what size speakers are correct? Thanks a lot
Jon

Not much room in the doors, the winder mechanism takes up alot of space as it goes up and down, so small speakers. I've got two good ones in back that have their own casing and even a couple either side of the centre consol (which don't do much). I've noticed a trend to fit tweeters at either end of the dash, which is not such a bad idea as that would give best stereo imageing and then you could put the larger speakers anywhere, maybe in front of the rear wheels either side? or perhaps in the foot wells projecting into that dead space inside the front guards.

I fitted them into the footwells of my Roadster and prefer the sound to those mounted in the panels either side of the rear seat on my GT. The footwells help to amplify the sound and seperate the stereo. The units are about 6" twin speakers and installation was pretty simple using a drill and angle grinder to make the holes.

Hello Jon,

In my GT I have reasonable sized speakers (13 cm, about 5") mounted towards the bottom rear of the door panels, well away from winder mechanisms.

Bumpkin.

In my GT i have them in the rear, two holes cut in the shelf above the spare wheel, right next the rear wheelarches. they are 6 inchers, and when the rear seat is down the sound is unbelievable.

I know it kind of hinders the rear load space, but the advantage of good quality sound seriously outweights that!!

Jon,

I installed 5 1/4" (I'm sure 6 1/2" will fit, but I didn't want to cut too much) Quart Speakers in the footwells of my '73 BGT. I added 4" Quart speakers in the side panels behind the seats just touching the window trim rails. They are unobstructed with the rear seat up or down.

I used Dynamat sound deadening around each speaker hole and on the inside of the body panels opposite the speakers.

The rear speakers run off the radio, while I fitted an amp that sits behind the glove box to drive the front speakers.

The system is virtually invisible and sounds just great. The added benefit is that you can remove the speakers to spray Waxoyl inside the body cavities.

My Alpine radio has an input that allows me to play my CD, Mini Disk or MP3 through the system.
