MG MGB Technical - Fitting the brake wheel cylinder C-clip

Putting the C-clip on the back of the brake wheel cylinder is always a pain in the neck. I've done it a fair few times in the past and cursed each and every go. I wondered if there's a right way to do it.

I had a look at John Twist's video on YouTube and it wasn't much help. It's one of his early videos so it's a little fuzzy and he's so good, he's got it on before you notice he's even picked it up.

Yesterday it was time to change the wheel cylinder on my MGB. It went incredibly well so I thought I'd say how I did it and compare notes.

1) Take out the bleed nipple.
2) Fit the cylinder into the backplate.
3) Hook the two legs of the clip over the round boss of the wheel cylinder
4) With a small screwdriver, hook the centre prong of the clip over the boss as well.
(The whole clip is now in tension)
5) Using long armed Mole grips (Vice grips) work the clip gently down the boss until it clicks - satisfyingly - into place.

Hope this helps,

Do you mean the E-clip? I made a tool out of gash bits I had kicking around the garage - http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/braketext.htm#eclip

I dont know anything about B's but on a midget or Sprite there is a similar fitment. The Spridgets have a locating roll pin. Remove the pin tap 3/16unf or 2 BA and secure with a bolt instead of the clip. Can that be applied to a B?

You can use a pair of Vise Grips (mole grips), clamped on the axle flange, to hold the wheel cylinder in place while you attach the C clip. It's like having an extra pair of hands. RAY
