MG MGB Technical - flares
I know I am opening myself up to criticism from you pusists but here goes. Own two B's, one original and one not. Would like to put fender flares on the custom but have been unable to find a source. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check Brit-Tek (brit@tiac.com); they had "Sebring" flare sets in their most recent catalog. If you're gonna do it, the Sebring ones are the set to use.

get in contact with steven lilves of lilves racing. He has a really nice mgb roadster with fender flares. Lilves Racing manufactures them, and sells them. If you can get a hold of a copy of British Car Magazine, they have an ad in there. Or, If you can get onto the magazine's web page they'll have the contact info. The flares he makes aren't as bubbly as the seabring flares (properMG makes those too, www.propermg.com ). I think Lilves racing is based in California. I want a set of those flares myself.. but alas, I make minimum wage pumping gas. Drop me an e-mail if you want me to send you a picture of the guy's car. Cheers, Dave

I have a MGB race car with the fiberglass Sebring flares. I purchased the body shell with the flares already in place. The front fenders appear to be pretty much a bolt-on project. The rears however are not. I can't believe anybody else in the world would do this but I'll tell you the story anyway. The previous owner applied the rear flares OVER THE EXISTING REAR WHEEL ARCHES! The flares were purely cosmetic and would never allow anything but standard wheel widths and offsets to be used. Its really stupid looking to have skinny tires under those muscular looking flares. Anyway, I had to go at them from the inside with a cutting wheel in an angle grinder to remove the outer half of the wheel arches. I purchased new outer arch halves and pop riveted them in place with a sheet metal band about 4" wide, spanning across the seam all the way around the arch, between the two halves. I filled the voids exposed in the boot with expanding foam "crack filler". So now there is full use of the extra space under there and they look great with wide rims and extra offset toward the outside. Cutting away the outer arches BEFORE applying the rear flares would obviously be the way to go.

With the sebrig flares the front is a replacement fender(for the GT). The back are "chemically bonded" to the existing fender. With the front i hear there's some modification required to fit the fenders to a roadster, but i don't know what it is. With the back you might wanna cut out the existing metal as kelvin suggests. With the Lilves Racing flares, all 4 are just and add-on to the existing fender. They are as well fiberglass. And you'll have to chew up all 4 fenders here. But on the bright side, the flares from lilves cost around 300 bucks, whereas the sebring flares are around 700... all in US currency of course.

How about the RV8 replica wings(fenders)? Wasn't there a kit to make a B look RV8-esque? Is the RV8 wing flared out? Who sells the kit? Rob (CGT with 244BHP and Yokohamas that scuff)

I have a file from one of the British MG publications which illustrates a method for flaring the stock rear fender openings. This involves cutting the lip and folding it as well as making radial cuts into both the inner and outer fender, then welding and /or brazing in between the cuts and filling with fiberglass. If you want it just shoot me an email. I am going to do this on a V6 conversion I am doing as it gives tire clearance (using LE wheels and a 65 series tire) and a nice "mild" custom look.

When I was searching for the same, I found that MGOC Spares also sells a set of Sebring flares. You can check them out at this address: http://www.mgocaccessories.co.uk/acatalog/MGOC_Accessories__Bodywork_42.html
