MG MGB Technical - Found on bulkhead under underseal

As I will not be using the GT for a while, I decided to attack the thick layer of underseal applied by the PO in the engine bay. Not too pretty under it but I think I can make it look a lot better even with hand painting for now.

I found this plastic circular thing held on by 2 screws between the heater and the brake solenoid - as a matter of interest what is it? I cannot see it in the parts books.

Also the screws holding it in are solid, as is one on the pedal blanking plate - would a screw extractor be the best way ahead? I have soaked them with penetrating oil overnight but cannot budge them.

Last one for now - what screw threads are they - they are 4.6mm diameter - BA?

Thanks

Mike,
a photo would help.

What penetrating oil did you use, if it was ordinary WD40 forget it, I've never had PlusGas fail that I can remember. Obviously you need to break any paint, underseal, rust/crud/muck seal around the head of the screws as much as you can to allow the PlusGas (or Kroil) to creep in. As you have done leave to soak overnight then try tightening to break the rust/crud/muck seal around the screw before loosening. If nothing moves then repeat, apply more PlusGas and leave to soak overnight again, ect.

I've yet to try but I'd favour a reverse drill bill to extract a screw as it makes sense to me.

Unless I've got it wrong, according to a supplier the screws are a mix of various - pozi pan head, UNF No.10 x 1/2" and hex head, UNF, 5/16" X 1/2" and hex head, UNF, 1/4" X 3/8" and (?)hex head, UNF, 5/16" X 5/8(?).

I though I had uploaded one but it appears not! I will try again - must be doing something wrong!

It was penetrating oil - still no luck. More just put on for tonights soak

That is just a plastic grommet in the hole for the LHD throttle cable abutment and the screws just fill the threaded holes for the same.

The screws don't hold anything and are 2BA, I think.

Look on the other side of the pedal box to see what it looks like.

Pop the grommet out from below if you want.

Chris at Octarine Services

Well Chris would know.

The grommet looks like it was once (a clearer) plastic grommet, a swift gentle shovel by a suitable sized drift from below should pop it out.

If you have a couple of 2BA nuts and enough thread exposed on the screws below you could use the nuts to raise the screws to make them easier to remove from above but if they're in securely why disturb them, stop water and other ingress to.

Thanks. I did try to match it with something on the other side but failed, I think I will leave well alone and just get the screw out from the blanking plate, I am not after a concours finish as you can probably tell!

Now to summon the confidence to remove the servo as there is decades of grot behind it. , I will do some searching in the archives for the Gotcha's

That's something that has always amused me
The RH drive cars have the fittings for LH drive but the LH drive cars don't have the RH fittings
Bit strange really why they would be different, you'd think it would have been easier to make them all the same----

There were quite a lot of differences between home market shells and the export shells and since the export market was larger than the home market I am guessing that the extra fittings / mountings were provided in case they wanted more shells for export.

Not entirely correct Willy. The master cylinder/pedal box cover has a tab on the top for the throttle cable on the RHD cars. The tab is still there, empty and redundant on the LHD cars.
