MG MGB Technical - FRAM PH2857A Oil Filter

Does anyone know anything about this oil filter? Is this the good sort of FRAM, with an efficient anti drainback valve, or the bad sort?

There is much information on oil filters in the archives, but a lot of it dates back to 1998-99. Maybe it is time for an Oil Filter update?

I have been experimenting lately with Unipart and Classic Gold filters (Moss), both have part no GFE102, and find the quality very varying. One Classic Gold filter gave instant oil pressure even when the car had been standing for several days, the next one did not. The Unipart filter on the car right now drains empty within 24 hours, so I will replace it.

Hi Tore,
Afaik Unipart and Moss don't make their own and I wouldn't use them.

I just had a low oil pressure experience using a Mobil oil filter. Clifton pointed out the filter as a possible cause. I changed the filter to a FRAM PH-43 and got all my oil pressure back.

I read that thread with interest. I have some of the same symptoms with the Unipart filter in the car now, only not quite as dramatic. When the engine is cold, oil pressure goes to about 50, and then starts to climb slowly. When the engine is hot, it settles at 65-70. And when the car has been standing for a couple of days, it takes 7-8 seconds before the needle moves.

I can not find FRAM PH 43 here, but my local MG parts supplier, a very decent and knowledgeable chap, has the FRAM PH2857A in stock for the MGB. They are made in Britain - or so it says on the box - and they have an anti drainback valve. I think I will try one.

Hi,
I bought my Fram PH43 at of all places Walmart. I have used the AC PF13 and the Penzoil forget the number but I found the Oil Pressure the same with all models 50-75 PSI

I had been using the Fram PH 43, on the last oil change I splurged on a K&N 2004, big difference in the oil pressure on start up. Jumps right up as soon as the engine lights up.

In the USA the Fram PH 43 is used on several older Chrysler products cars/trucks and is used on some Fords so it's always easy to find in the USA.

Is the NAPA 1068 considered to be a Quality filter...?

The Fram PH2857A, made in the EU, at least works better that the Unipart GFE102 I just tried. After standing for 24 hours, oil pressure comes up immediately, and reaches 60+.

I quit using Fram after seeing one cut open. The Purolater Pureone is a much better filter.

Fram now makes a premium version of their filter which advertises a better check valve. A check valve that allows the filter to drain over time will result in the delay in oil pressure at start up as it needs to refill the filter housing. This issue only applies to those cars with the filter upside down. The earlier models with the hanging filter don't need a check valve. I note that my pressure is nearly instant at startup with the premium version. After a week or 10 days I note some delay. It appears the premium check valve is good but not perfect.

Tom, I NAPA filters are made by Wix and they are good filters. Carquest filters are also made by Wix.

Carl, I don't use Fram filters either, too many start up rattle problems on Japanese vehicles I have owned. I have never tried one on an MG. That said the Fram PH 43 seems to work very well on MGB's. I see them on lots of B's that show up at car shows.
