MG MGB Technical - Fresh Air Vent Tube
Good Day Gents, The fresh air vent tubes on my 74 1/2 B Roadster are kaput....I was doing some rewiring and noticed that they were brittle and cracked, so thinking that I could easily replace them I removed them "forcefully", and they are no longer useable! So, I checked the Moss and VB catalogues, and guess what? They are listed as N/A. Does anyone have an idea where I might find replacements? I guess they could be fabricated if need be. Will appreciate your input. Cheers, Doug |

Doug, Not quite sure what you mean by "fresh air vent tubes". From the Moss catalog, is that part # 363-170? If so, simply replace with any rubber/plastic hose. The bladder at the bottom will be a problem to replace, but I don't think it is a major concern. gregor |

Gig, No, the part # is 456-115, listed on page 152 of current catalog. The only problem is the rectangular end that fits on the vent grille assy. Cheers, Doug |

OK -- see the part. First thought would be to find a suitable replacement, eg: clothes dryer exhaust hose, or other air handling. Shop around good hardware stores, industrial supply houses etc. There might be some fabrication necessary from dash vent to hose. best I can do on this. gregor |

Doug, Is this something that can be removed without removing the dash? I've got a '72 parts car from which I might be able to get a pair... |

Rob, Possible but difficult. They just have a "push fit" on the back of the vents, but have a tighter fit into the cowl "air box." You might take a look and see what you think. Cheers, Doug |

Doug, I'll try to take a look. The problem is that the car is not here, and it's a little hard to get to where it is (it's pretty much stashed in the woods!) Maybe tomorrow I can get out that way and have a look..... Rob |

Doug- Tony Barnhill has his own MG graveyard and can almost certainly send you on original one. He has his own website at http://theautoist.com/ |

Steve, Thanks! Just e-mailed Tony, so we'll see if he can save me! (Lesson learned: Never throw away or do anything to any part unless you know that a replacement is available!!) Cheers, Doug |

Doug- Better yet, never throw away any part unless it's totally shot and a rebuild kit is unavailable. You can always eventually swap it or sell it. Just ask Tony Barnhill! |

On my 68 GT, I had to fabricate extensions for the defroster hoses (radio depth required moving the hose connections from the heater box down abit)and I found excellent replacements using the flex ducting sold in auto parts stores for the little air intake heater "stoves" that some cars use to suck cold air over the exhaust manifold before it enters the air filter housing when the air is really cold. These metal flex ducts are probably long enough once expanded to do your job and they do come in various sizes from about 1 1/4" ID to about 2.5" ID. FWIW. |

Bob, Thanks for the input. I am exercising all alternatives to find replacements, but am striking out so far. The solution may be using something like you suggest. Cheers, Doug |

There is another good solution if you have access to a lathe. I cut down some PVC pipe to fit in there and it works just fine. Eliminates the need for the sealing block too. I don't remember the dimensions though, but IIRC each end was turned down and there was a section in the middle that was not, plus the ends tapered. HTH. Jim |
