MG MGB Technical - Front fender alighment
I bought my 73B roadster a couple years ago. It had a "decent" body restoration done in 1995, and was kept in a climate controlled garage until just before I bought it. All remains sound, clean and in good shape. However (why does there always seem to be a however with these cars!) the body shop didn't do such a good job installing one of the new fenders. If you look at the car from the front the left fender is about 3/8" too high at the junction with the hood and front grill. As such the hood looks like it's sitting too low on that side, as does the headlight. Is it a lost cause to think about unbolting and trying to lower that corner of the fender? It does seem to be sitting tight on the fender sub-frame that it bolts to (bolt well running the length of the fender next to the hood). However, it's so high they had to bend about 6" of the vertical edge of the fender (that the hood overlaps) down so the hood would close. I looks like the fender is probably installed correctly everywhere except at that front point close the the radiator......something is out of whack there. I'm afraid if I mess with this I could damage the paint job. Thanks, BH |

looks like the bonnet may b bent down in that corner as itfits higher up if not try packing the grill up as it does look low and have you got the rubber dome buttons in the top of the grill as it looks very close the buttons will lift your bonnet in that corner if its missing if its there make sure it is a full dome as you slice a bit off if you want to lower the bonnet bonnet=hood in uk ste |

Something is well out of kilter there - possibly the car was in an accident and the front inner wing panel/chassis rail is distorted. I would remove the wing (fender) and measure the inner wing carefully - look for creases in the inner panel and/or the chassis rail below it. Compare the dimension from the oil cooler tray up to the flange on each side and compare them . Without sorting the underlying problem out the wing will never sit right. You may need to take the car to a bodyshop that has a straightening jig who will be able to pull the body back down into shape. |
