MG MGB Technical - Front suspension change
Dear MG lovers, I am thinking about changing the front suspension on my mgb roadster to the after market types offered by the MGOC or Moss, but here in spain no one can give me advice, experiences etc on which of the different types is best. Any advice from anyone with a wide experience of the different types would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any replies. |

Dean; I have the Moss coil over system On my wife's Gt and also have one on my project car for myself. It along with tube shocks on the rear turned her Gt into the best handling B I have ever driven. It is the stiffer road/rally spring rate and I have a 3/4 inch front bar with solid home made mounting blocks. Go for it ypu'll love it. Only negative is a stiff ride at high speed when road is not done well. (a common thing in North Carolina in recent years. Bob Thompson |

Bob, don't do it. To improve the handling and ride rebuild the front king pins, bearings and fit new poly bushing everywhere. Also replace the front shocks with either new or rebuilt. If you want a firmer ride increase the valving. This is probably the biggest improvement you will make. The original design is both clever and effective, but uses the front shocker absorber as the upper A arms as well as the shock asborber. It's imperative that the front shocks are in good conditon with little wear to perform at thier best. Everyone who's converted has a different story but the consensus is negative. Stay original and enjoy the ride. Andy 74 B GT |

Andy; Have you ever driven a B with coil over front suspension. Don't knock it till you do, It's wonderful. Moss only sold about 100 in the US. I bought three one MGA and 2 Bs. Bob |

I didn't realize Bob had a coil over front, but I can assure you he gets around West Virginia twistie roads very well. He kept me busy for several hundred miles about two months ago trying to keep up. FWIW, Clifton |

Dean,I have the Hawk/NG Cars coilover suspension marketed by the MGOC in 2 of my cars.I was the first one in the US to put it on the road and I can tell you that it works very well.I enjoy playing with all of the adjustable features(caste, camber, toe, shock valving, and ride hight)to dial in various handling traits and it has been a fun learning experience. My second car with the suspension is a V8 project complete with a Jag E-type rear suspension and won't be on the road for a while due to other projects at my shop.By the way, while I love the coilover setup in my Sebring GT,I also enjoy my bone-stock-restored '68B.It just seems that each car has it's own personality and fun to drive in it's own way. That's my opinion on the whole stock/vs./modified cars issue It's your car, enjoy it......Dave Deerson |
