MG MGB Technical - fRONT SUSPENSION RATTLE

I am going to rebuild the front suspension anyway but can anyone tell me what to look for when it rattles alarmingly on rough road surfaces or when running over catseys.
M Blakey

This could be a number of things from a worn rubber to a loose or worn shock.
Have you jacked the car up and had a good look and poke around? Have you used a crow bar when you did this, to pull the various bits of suspension around? Does the steering wheel move when the rattle occurs? Is the car stable at speed or when going round bends?
These and other details are needed so that someone can help. Could you please tell us more about the symptoms?

Same problem I am having. Rebalanced front wheels, checked bushings-appear recently installed. Assuming kingpins are the culprit. Is there a test to determine whether or not they are the cause?

If there is no play in the shock absorbers, the steering ball joints or the A-frame bushes that support the inside of the spring mounting plate, then try jacking up the car and see if there is any play in the front wheels - both in the vertically and horizontal (steering) axes. Vertical play can originate in the two upright (vertical) king pin bushes, horizontal play in the bottom (horizontal) king pin bush. Any play of any sort in any of the three king pin bushes needs to be fixed eventually!
Bert Holland

The vertical play on the swivel hub should be .008" to .013".
