MG MGB Technical - Fuel Guage Question
I know we have some great electrical people out there. Hope someone can answer this. I purchased a fuel guage for my 67 B GT. It looks like the early B fuel guage, but it apparently is from another car, perhaps a spridget. Numbers are FG2530/70 12 V Smiths The unit has two terminals on one side with a "B" under it and the other side has one terminal with a "T" under it. I found a electical diagram for an early sprite that has this T - B marking on it, so I think I know what wire goes where. B= green power. T= sending unit. The midget it comes from does not use the guage stabilizer and the guage will not work hooked to the B guage stabilizer. Will a midget guage work with the sending unit from the B? and can I bypass the stabilizer and run the guage directly? Second question. Can the face be exchanged with the correct guage from the 67? (have access to one that the face is poor.) |

Hi Bruce. I am surprised that the gauge doesn't give any indication at all, maybe you have some other problem. I wouldn't expect the stabiliser issue to prevent it from giving an indication, though that issue and the (possibly) different sender resistance might cause large errors. Did you take care to earth the gauge body, I am not sure that it is necessary for this particular instrument's function, though it would be if it had an internal voltage regulator. I think you would find changing the face tricky as it would involve removing the needle, which I suspect is soldered on. Don |
