MG MGB Technical - Fuel line pressure
I just replaced a fuel pump in my '67 B. But I now notice that I'm getting a little fuel and air comming out of the float bowel overflow hoses. It never did that before with the old pump. I've got that screwy little fuel line pressure regulator in the fuel line just before the carbs. What is that thing to be set at? Mine has always been set at '1'. Does anyone know? Thanks, All! |

Mat - You don't say what kind of a pump you put on your car, but the standard SU fuel pump for the MGB should put out between 1.5 - 3.0 lbs and you should have no need for any kind of a pressure regulator. If you are using some other brand of pump, it may be necessary to use the regulator set to the above pressure range. As to the air and fuel coming out of the float bowl overflow line, you may have an air leak in the system that is causing aireation of the system, or there may be some dirt in the needle valves that is keeping them from closing all the way or the needle valves may need replacement. Good luck - Dave |

Float bowel? Maybe they have sh*t in them. Changing the pump could have disturbed dirt in the lines which has found its way to the float valves. Disconnect the pump (where the white transfers from the main loom to the rear loom in the engine compartment is usually most convenient on a chrome bumper) and run the carbs dry, then reconnect the pump. The resultant rush of fuel through the wide-open valves usually shifts anything that is stuck there. But if that doesn't work you will need to change the valves, and if it does but keeps happening you might need to invest in a fuel line filter. These were mounted on the side of the heater box on later model cars. |
