MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump
Good Morning, Is there any reason that you cannot replace a failed stock fuel pump on a 64 B with a generic electronic one? Is there such a thing as too much pressure? Thanks in advance for your time. Time which should be spent going for a ride. Thanks Ed Kulick |

Hi Ed. There is LOTS about this in the archives, some quite recent. Yes, you can have too much pressure, which can be dealt with by a (rather obviously named) fuel pressure regulator. A fuel pressure regulator is arguably worth having anyway, whatever type of pump you have My personal view is that a good original pump with the contacts checked / replaced WITH QUALITY CONTACTS if necessary every 25,000 miles is the best option. Maybe carry a spare pump if you really feel the need. HTH.. Don |

Ed - There are numerous aftermarket fuel pumps available that can be used on the MGB, including the Facet, Carter and Walbro. Most of these pumps are isolated from ground, so there is no problem hooking them up of either negative or positive ground. Just be sure that the one you get is a low pressure pump (about 2 - 4.5 psi) or be prepared to use a regulator. I agree with Don, that a good original SU fuel pump will last about as long as any of the other pumps on the marked unless the car sits idle for long periods of time, in which case the points will film over and stop the pump from running (400 grit sand paper applied vigoriously to the contacts will cure this). Your original pump can be restored and even converted to solid state if you want to go that route. E-mail me directly if this last alternative interests you. Good luck - Dave |
