MG MGB Technical - fuel pump
Ihave a 1975 mgb. I think the fuel pump is an after market pump. It is an "Auto Pump" made in n.z. Part No. AP115. It clicks when I turn the key on. Does anyone know if this is an electronic pump or does it have points like the SU pumps? I am currently installing a back up pump which got me involved in identifing the current pump. Thanks for any info on the attached. PS The people on this site are really great. As an older man living my dreams of owning an mg I find this site very interesting. Ihope to meet some of you folks someday. |

The Auto Pump is an after market pump. The original pump use in MGs is a SU fuel pump. The Auto Pump that you have is an electronic pump that uses a magnetic reed switch to trigger the pump. It is a good pump except that it is plastic and has a nasty habit of developing cracks around the inlet and outlet ports, particularly if the banjo fittings have been overtightened. I would definitely suggest a permanently installed back up pump for the day when the inevitable leaks occur, at which time I would recommend replacing the Auto Pump with a proper SU pump. I have an article on installing a back up pump at: http://www.custompistols.com/cars/dave/BackUpFuelPump.htm Cheers - Dave |

Dave What is the possibility of a major fuel leak developing from cracks in the Auto Pump plastic? Would it be a good idea to put a non-return valve in the outlet of this pump to prevent the backup pump from pumping significant amounts of gas on to the pavement? Larry |

I've not seen any of the pumps with a major leak, just small ones that keep the outside of the pump wet. With a permanently installed back up pump, all one has to do if the primary pump starts leaking is to disconnect the lines to it and put a piece of fuel line in place of the pump. To keep the line from the tank to the from siphoning fuel out of the tank when the line is disconnected from the pump, just disconnect the line from the tank first. Cheers - Dave |

A proper replacement SU should do the job fine. You may have to see if the fuel line fittins have been modified for this aftermarket pump. I have an old Hardi pump on my 65 that has been fully reliable for over 10 years. It clicks like an SU but I don't know if it's electronic or points. You can find Hardi on the internet. It is a German company. Look for the page for carburetors. |
