MG MGB Technical - Fuel pump orientation.
G'day. I am sure there is a very good reason for having the outlet of the fuel pump at the top when installed.....but what is it? Just curious. Cheers Tony |

Never stated anywhere but I it must be because it is designed to be self bleeding in that orientation. If you want to fit in some other way in the spirit of scintific enquiry I will be interested to learn the results ;-) |

Thanks Stan. Don't really want to fit it in any other way unless I need to so it will fit. As I said, I'm just curious. In all my long association with SU pumps I have never been aware that it needs to be fitted that way. It makes me wonder how many I have fitted incorrectly without knowing it. Tony |

There are also valves and an air-chamber inside the pump, quite possibly to do with orientation of those as well. |

It is primarily to do with purging air from the pump. A pump that is upside down (even the L type pumps with the gravity controlled valve disks) will work upside down but the efficiency will not be a high as possible and one can wind up with an air bubble in the pump that is hard to clear. Thanks Dave. I have replied to your most informative email. This is two questions you have answered for me. Tony |
