MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump replacement - redux

Geesh - I went to update a thread that was last commented on on Sept. 2 and it's already in "archives".

Anyway, here's what I said in my original post: "Frank Sperling, California, USA
My fuel pump is dying (weak tick-tick upon startup plus it's missing at highway speeds). I am faced with either replacing the points, or replacing the entire pump.

Do you recommend the OEM pump or have any of you had success with a solid-state replacement? "

RESULTS: I followed a member's suggestion to try to replace the points on my fuel pump first. So I ordered points from Moss ($9.30) and...car works great!

Replacing points is a very simple thing to do...the second time. So, while I struggled a bit this first go-round, ended up with a wonderful "tic, tic, tic" and a solid running car.

Thanks all for the suggestion, saved me over $100 for the cost of replacing entire fuel pump!

Well done - the solid state ones are OK too.

That's the "thing" I like about the SU pump - that it
can be rebuilt in a backyard garage without special
tools or supernatural skills.

With a couple of incedences of replaced points
and one diaphragm, my car is running on the original pump that was installed by the kind folks
at the Abington factory back in 1971.

If I hadn't broken the mounting lug for the "pulse stabilizer" cover, my '67 would be working fine too! (the used replacement of unknown vintage still works fine in my uprated engine).

Mike!
mike!

Frank,

I've had plenty of luck with SU pumps. Not to say I haven't had any go bad on me, but for the most part, I consider them as reliable as anything else.

I've installed a 2nd, redundant solid state pump inline with the SU. This way, if the SU goes south, I flick the 3-way switch to 2nd pump.
