MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump Servicing
I am wondering if it is possible to do preventative maintainance on the standard SU fuel pump to help minimise the possibility of failure. Mine is quite fresh but don't want it to fail on a long journey on a far away place. Many thanks Brian McIlvenna |

Brian - Years ago, for the T series cars, tha manual said to periodically run a piece of fine sand paper between the points to clean them, but I don't believe that that is really necessary on today's pumps. The pumps today have a swamping resistor across the coil and a diode across the points, so the arching is kept to a minimum and the pumps will really go a very long time before giving any problem. I would suggest carying a amall generic backup pump to get you home in case the SU pump ever does pack it in, but they will usually give you some warning before quiting altogether. Normally a good smack with a screwdriver handle will get the pump going when it first gives any signs of problems. At that point, when you get to a good servicing point, instal the backup pump and then repair or replace the SU pump. Good luck - Dave |

I agree with David. With a good SU you are going to have to go on a very very long journey to a very very far away place before you can expect problems. However I would only contemplate a generic pump if I was sure that the physical connections are compatible, some do seem to require some butchery to the existing pipe-work and unions. |
