MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump: Leave well alone, restore or replace??
Recent troubles with my car i think have highlighted that my fuel supply system could probably do with a bit of an overhaul. I need to sort out the earth to the fuel pump and i have a leak from some of the metal fuel lines where the clip has worn away/corroded?? the pipe, this appears to be making the pump rather noisy. I was wondering whilst at the same time, whether to take the fuel pump out to give it a bit of an overhaul?? If i did, how easy is it to overhaul - is it worth the hassle, or shall either exhange for a new one/recon unit (saving me some bother) or just leave well alone? It only appears noisy due to slight air leak and was previously running fine - shall i leave it?? thoughts apreciated ~PHIL |

I bought a brand-new SU pump, points style for about $90 US and am quite happy with it. Note that there are inferior plastic-bodied pumps out there. The genuine ones made by Burlen are metal. If the pump is original, it's probably worth replacing. |

If the pump is working without needing to be beaten with a screw driver ever now and again then I wouldn't do anything to it. If you do have to convince (beat) the pump to work sometimes then you may want to try replace the points ($8.25 from Moss). If its anything like a MGA pump then it is very easy. In the long run if the pump has problems then you are probably better off getting a new pump. My dad's MGA had a pump that needed convincing ever now and again. The problem returned in a month or two even with new points. We ended up getting a new pump and its been working great for the past 4 years. I took the old pump apart so many times that I can now take it out of the car, take it completely apart, put it back together, and put it in the car in only a few minutes. |

Phil - Go to the following web site for some insight into the SU fuel pumps: http://www.custompistols.com/cars/articles/dd_su_fuel_pumps_101.htm The ground for the fuel pump is under one of the nuts of the mounting stud for the rear license plate bracket. This is a place that corrosion tends to form, so I would suggest undoing it and cleaning the surface very well and even coating it liberally with a good dielectric grease. Steven is correct when he says that if you don't have to beat the pump with a screwdriver handle to make it work, then it is best left alone. Good luck - Dave |
