MG MGB Technical - Fuel tank

The earth lead is no longer attached to the fuel tank and the positive wire is not attached very well.

Can anyone please give me advice on how i could best attach these wires.

As my Battery is runing flat after a day or so which i think is because of having no earth connection to the fuel tank. Is this right or is there something else to look for. I am preety sure the battery is of sound condition.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If you are refering to the fuel guage sending unit in the fuel tank, it only draws current when the ignition switch is on. If your battery is going dead over night, it should not be caused by the conections to the sending unit. If the ground wire is not attached, the fule guage is probably not functioning properly either. Look somewhere else for your problem.

If the ground spade has broken off the sender then you could try brazing a suitable bit of metal on its place, but remove the sender from the tank first! This can be done at about 1/4 tank if you raise the right rear corner. If the connectors have fallen off the wires then crimp/solder new ones on.

The above is nothing to do with your battery going flat. Is the ignition light glowing when you turn on the ignition? Does it go out when the engine is started and revved to at least 1000rpm? Is the alternator charging - check for about 14.5v on a brown wire at the fusebox with the engine running at a fast idle with minimal electrical load? To check for a battery drain remove the battery ground strap and connect an analogue voltmeter on its 12v scale in its place. For an alternator equipped car it is normal to show a few volts, but if it shows 12v (and the battery is charged) you have a drain. Remove the plug from the back of the alternator and see if that clears it, if it does the alternator diodes have failed. If not remove the purple fuse in the fusebox, if that clears it something like an interior light or boot/trunk light could be on permanently. If that doesn't clear it you will have to start removing browns from the solenoid, light switch, ignition switch., relays etc until you find it.
