MG MGB Technical - Fuel Tank

My tank leaked so I purchased a new one.

I then had severe cavitation in the pump. Exhaustive checks including replacing the fuel pump and pipes and with help from experienced friends produced no improvement. In desperation I rang the supplier who knew about the problem. The internal pipe was not properly soldered to the tank wall allowing the ingress of air.

They sent me another new tank. This one too was NBG.

They then supplied another make of tank which is AOK.

All this involved hours and hours of work for two of us.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? (The replacement tanks were FOC).

Bob

PS If anyone wants a dodgy fuel tank I have three (two unused) in my garage!

Have had problems of faulty soldering with the Canadian, plated items.
Would assume it's because they use plated steel and hence don't want to braze the joints as this will destroy the coating in the area of the joint. Soft soldering, which is much weaker than silver or brass brazing, is therefore the only option. Also when fitting them one has to be very careful, if you have a solid steel pipe from tank to pump, that the joint to the tank isn't strained. Best to cut a few inches out of the pipe and put a length of rubber in and be very careful to hold the square boss when tightening the olive joint.

I had my tank repaired rather than buying a new one.
Some of the new tanks don't have any internal baffles.

Pal has just had a galvanised tank fitted after a seep from where the external fitting was attached to the tank wall. It's probably only been driven home from the workshop so far! He wondered if it was ethanol, incorrect tightening or stress from the solid pipe to the pump is my guess.
