MG MGB Technical - Fuel Treatment Question
What is suggested to put in fuel while car sits so gas does not go bad ? If fuel is totally drained out of car, will this affect fuel pump, Weber Carb ?? Thanks in advance. |

There is a product called STABIL, sold just about everwhere, any autoparts store and places like walmart and Kmart will have it. You'll spot it easliy as it comes in a clear bottle and it's bright red (looks like cough syrup). I used it over the winter and it worked great, car started right up. I dunno about the second part of your question but you may want to top off your tank before storage to prevent rusting on the inside, or so I've been lead to think. |

Kirk - As Brian says, Stabil is a good product to keep the gas from going stale during long layups (although I didn't use anything in the gas in the tank of our TD when I had it down for about a three year period to rebuild the engine and I didn't have any problem). After putting the Stabil in the tank, you might want to take the car out for a drive to mix the Stabil and the gas and get the mix through the fuel pump and into the carburetor float bowls. Good luck - Dave |

Kirk- As mention in the previous threads, Stabil is a good product if the car is going into long-term or winter storage. I'd recommend that you add it at the gas station and then fill the fuel tank all the way. Your fuel system's biggest enemy is rust, so the fuller it is, the less trouble you'll have in the future, so when you get the car home to put it in storage, get a funnel and fill the tank all the way. Also, drain and replace the oil in the engine and transmission so that the acids in the old oil won't damage the internal parts. I do this during the worst part of winter and have no problems when the weather turns decent again. |
