MG MGB Technical - Gas Tank interchangability
Asked this before, but went out of town for a bit and didn't get to read any responses. Have a 68 B and I could use a new gas tank. There's a new one for a 70-76 on EBay going for about $140. The 70-76 tanks are also 10 gal but are vented. The 68's not. They want $220 for a 68 tank! Can I just cap the vent off and use the tank? ending units are the same part no. |

Tom; Yes, you can cap the tank vent if you use a vented gas cap. Clifton |

Hi Clifton, I put a new tank from a '70-'76 model on my '77 B and now when I stop to put fuel in it some of it gets spit back out of the tank opening. I'm just curious to know why the earlier cars had a different tank. Cheers, Dave |

David, I don't know why filling your tank is a problem. I would have thought the early tanks would not interchange to the rubber bumper cars until Bob Thompson said on an earlier thread they would interchange. Bob works on British cars full time and is more qualified to answer that question than I am. Until around 1970 we didn't have emissions regulations controlling gasoline vapors emitted to the open air so fuel tanks were simple and vented through a vented gas cap. A vent is necessary to keep the fuel pump from creating a vacuum in the tank and shutting down the fuel flow to the carburetor. A high vacuum could also perhaps collapse the tank. In 1970 for MG's and I asume all cars for the USA, emissions regulations required that fuel systems be designed to prevent fuel vapors from polluting the air. MG used a cannister charged with charcoal granules to filter the vapors. A non vented fuel cap was required, the filler tube had external lugs so the earlier vented cap would not fit, filler tubes prior to 1970 had internal lugs. The tanks from 1970 and on have a vent connector to vent the tank and route the vapors through a vapor separator and some tubing to the vapor cannister. Sorry for the long answer. Clifton |

Save yer money and slush your tank (unless it is a total loss or missing). The slushing compound will cover pretty big holes and you will never have to worry about rust again. I speak from very leaky experience! Mike! |

I have a 1966, or a 65 or whatever. I bought the bolt in tank, then found it did not fit. I then bought the strap in tank. I have a new, in the box bolt on, no baffle, made in Canada tank. You want it? Its in the classifieds and I want it out of my garage. Let me know fmurch@asymtek.com San Diego |
