MG MGB Technical - Gearbox concern

Is there a difference between the early 4 synchro gearboxes and the latter ones? The reason for my question is that I am rebuilding a 1971 mgb roadster and have recently installed the engine and gearbox. The problem is that gear changes are a bit stiff - is this normal? I have also test driven a latter rubber bumper MGB and there the gears seems somewhat smoother.

Whats this Alex, nobody has given you any answer? Well, if all was well with the box before it all went together, are your getting clutch binding? Ie. is it not releasing well as you try to get it in gear? Mike

They changed with rubber bumpers, the speedo drive changed from 1280tpm to 1000tpm. But as to feel after all this time you would be lucky to find two the same, my pals is 'looser' than mine. His is a bit sloppy, mine sticks a bit occasionally.

Worth lubricating the shifter ball and remote rod bushes where it goes back inside the box. Commonly sticky after sitting a long time. Can do from underneath.

Stiffness is usually associated with the remote mechanism as suggested above.. The 2 lever balls, the plastic cup and the anti-rattle. Grease them.

Alex, AS you probably know I have a 72 Roadster and a 72 GT. Now I rebuilt both gearboxes and the one on the roadster is definitely stiffer than the GT. I noticed this when I was reassembling the box. Now as Allan says I believe that the stiffness is in the remote mechanism as my sliding hubs are perfectly smooth so I too would be inclined to grease the joints in the remote. Mind you whilst the roadster is stiffer than the GT by no means can you say that gearchanging is stiff
