MG MGB Technical - Greasing the swivel axels
Ok I got the suspension back together and I decided to grease the swivel axels. Three grease fittings on each side. The top and bottom were fine but the center ones wouldn't take the grease. Does this mean a major disassembly of the front suspension? George |

check the grease fitting first, undo and fit to the gun to see if it lets grease through. most probably the grease is hard in the gap. so swivel the assembly a few time to back and front to warm the grease and give it a pump at each end, should soften at some point. |

Periodically I use EP 80 or 90 instead of grease, it penetrates better and clears out congealed grease. |

Would heating the area with a hair dryer be enough to loosen the hardened grease? George |

It all depends on how hard the grease is packed in.It can't hurt to try. New grease fittings are another inexpensive option. RAY |

Suspension hanging down I trust? Is the steering free? It should move easily from lock to lock with nothing more than a little finger-tip on the steering wheel. If the nipple is OK, try slackening the top nut a little and see if any goes in then. If not, then maybe you will have to remove the king pin from the swivel axle to see why not. |

Used the hair dryer and moved the axel back and forth several times while using the grease gun at different locations. Don't know what worked but eventually they accepted the grease. Yes steering wheel moves easily from lock to lock with one finger. George |

Sometimes, it's the simple things that work best. Glad to hear that the fittings finally took some grease. RAY |
