MG MGB Technical - Greenstuff or Yellowstuff ?

hello
sorry for posting on a mgb page, but the mgc page dosent see much life from time to time and was wondering if any of you friendly mgb cahaps might lend some wisdom and advice ?

i have ordered a couple of weeks ago a new set of ebc front discs and greenstuff pads

i have chase my order as it hasnt yet arrived and i got back this email

HI,
SORRY FOR YOUR DELAY IN SENDING YOUR BRAKES YOU HAVE PAID FOR,THE PROBLEM WE HAVE IS THE GREENSTUFF PADS YOU REQUIRE ARE UNDER THE CONTROL OF MOTOR HERITAGE WE WILL HAVE TO ORDER THESE FROM THEM,BUT FOR THE SAME PRICE WE CAN SEND YOU YELLOWSTUFF PADS WHICH FOR YOUR MGC I WOULD RECOMMEND YELLOWSTUFF THESE ARE VERY GOOD FROM COLD ,MANY THANKS *****

does this sound right ?

would yellow stuff pads be better than green stuff pads

my thanks for your advice please

Yellow are harder and more abrasive. More suited to track use and very fast road. But because they are more abrasive they will shorten the life of your discs (rotors). Personally I wouldn't entertain them, I'm not that keen on Greenstuff either. Can't say I've ever noticed much difference in their performance and as for the claims that they dust less!!!! Wouldn't like to live off the difference!

Eurocarparts stock green stuff pads-tho they may have to order from Wembley.....and mine were for a B not a C

I've got Greenstuff pads and I'm not that enamoured with them either. I would buy Mintex 1144 next time.
Mike Howlett

I don't think Greenstuff pads are supposed to create less dust. It's more that the dust they do create is supposed to be less likely to stick to the wheels.

I have them on my car and don't have any complaints but I haven't ever tried any others so I can't compare!
Simon Jansen

Get a refund and buy either Mintex 1144's or Ferodo DS2500's

Not only will your front wheels last longer than 5 mins but they are all round much better pads.

I will never ever own another set of EBC pads in my lifetime, truly awful bits of kit that create so much dust despite advertising that they dont.

They wear out in no time and their ability to stop the car is much less than that of the two pads mentioned above.

This is just my opinion though, but i have used all the pads mentioned on both road and track.

Hope it helps you make a decision you are happy with in the end

Peter you are correct the M1144 pad is a very good high performance pad and seems to be well thought of.
The EBC factory in Bristol was in fact owned by Trist Draper which was scooped up by BBA (mintex) when they acquired DON group.

John, You learn something new every day.

I can only go off my own experiences, and due to them, I will wholeheartedly remain on the anti-EBC bandwagon, no matter who owns them.

Hello Peter, I think my last post was misleading, TMD(BBA(Mintex))) don't own EBC and never have. What happened I think is the engineers at Trist Draper took over the factory when it was being shut down by BBA. The pad formulation are there own and not a copy of any of Mintex's. I hope that clears think up, I could be wrong as I left Mintex in 1997.

I had a set of Mintex V8 pads on my supercharged B. They lasted well, but the dust, that they emitted, lifted the chrome off of the rims of my Dayton chrome wire wheels. RAY

Greenstuff on slotted and drilled TRW rotors and no compliants.

I have been very pleased with the greenstuff pads on our MGB. They work well from cold have survived some track laps and lasted well. I dont like the really sticky black dust they produce, cleaning wire wheels is hard enough without a detergent resisting coating. Someone I know via the MGCC who races had dreadful braking problems traced after most of a season to yellowstuff pads, I was told that once he had ditched the EBC pads and at the same time changed the discs then the problem was solved, although the old discs looked OK they would not work with new pads. This problem showed up partly in the rear brakes needing to be rebuilt after every race.
