MG MGB Technical - GT Steering wheel
I have a 1967 MGB GT Special steering wheel that was taken off of a parted out car. This is a wood rimmed streering wheel with three metal spokes containing 5 holes. It was very dirty so I cleaned it up and find that the wood is now very dry and light in color. I do not want it to crack so I will refinish it. I do not see much if any varnish left. Does anyone know what this wood was stained with or what darkness the stain was. Was it actually varnished or just coated with wood oil such as lindseed oil? Thanks. 1970 MGB 1980 MGB |

I have a 1967 MGB/GT Special which has a steering wheel like you describe. Mine needed repairs due to cracks near the spokes. It was varnished with a clear varnish. After I repaired the cracks with West System epoxy, in the same manner as I repair wooden sailboat masts, I revarnished the wood. That was over five years ago and is still fine after many thousnads of miles |
