Very informative....I have a colortune, but didn't even know you could use it without the sight tube... Thanks Edward |

Hi AP ,I thought i had read somewhere recently that gunsons colour tune didn't work with current unleaded petrol? I was thinking of getting rid of my kit which i have had for a long time but not used for nearly as long! Charles |

Hi, I use 2 colourtunes, and they seem to work OK, with unleaded. Using it without the sight tube was probably done to allow easy videoing, in real life it would be very awkward to see them, whilst working on the carbs. Herb |

When I last set my carbs, I used the colour-tune. But did not have it demonstrated like this video clip. I realise I could probably weaken off still more, the blue flame is hardly visible! Mind you, I will soon have my Air/Fuel meter on as well should be able to get it all spot on. I have to say that the car, just with colour-tune is running better than ever. I have to recommend the instrument. A 'seasoned' tuner may well be able to use just the 'ear' and experience, as in the MG Glove box manual tecnique. But I guess you cannot beat a little tecnology!. Tuning SU carbs is fairly simple procedure, without or without, a ColorTune. I adjust the jets until I get max RPM. Then run the car for 10 or 15 miles under normal conditions, remove the the #1 and #4 plugs or the #2 and #3 plugs, note the color, while looking for it to be a light to medium gray. Adjust the respective carb jet upwards (lean) to lighten the color and opposite to darken the color. Repeat process until all 4 plugs are the same gray color. You will now have a perfect fuel/air ratio. Frank Grimaldi |

Ah But Frank, not all of us might have eyes like yours! My wife buys my clothes because she says I have no colour sense. Imagine if I tried to set my fuel/air ratio by colour of plugs alone! I've worn a black sock and a brown one before now! Mike |
