MG MGB Technical - Headlamp rims!

I am just in the process of fitting parts to the latest project car and am having issues with headlamp rims.

I must be missing something here!

All parts were new but bought ages ago, metal bowls and the only rims that were available. They clip on at the top of the bowl in 2 places but nothing at the bottom to hold them on! I know some cars with standard 7in units have the rims held on with a screw but no can do on the B.

What am I missing?

I think you need some clips - BAU1460

You can see them, courtesy of paul4H, fitted here:

I have modified my headlight rings as they can be a real pain to get off. I have cut a clip sized notch in the rings and then rotate them slightly away from the clip. A mark on the rim ( I used a dab of yellow hammerite) lets me line them up again and off they pop - just the job in the rain before scrutineering or indeed the roadside.

A screw like the midget uses would be even easier!

I bought new bowls from the MGOC and they came with the threaded plate as for Mini and Midget etc. Fortunately I could swap the existing clip over which was suitable for reuse.

But as further down on that page they can wedge in the wrong place, get bent back and fore taking the ring on and off, and fracture. Fortunately BAU1460 as above are available and clip into the bowl in plate of the threaded plate. I've been able to replace fractured ones just by removing the ring, leaving the headlamp in place.

I don't know who sold them to me, but some years ago at MGCC Silverstone I bought new chrome rings that were plated on brass rather than steel. They have been excellent. No rust, no pitting and flexible enough to allow easy clipping and unclipping. I wonder if they still available?

you might want to try these from Tudor...

I replaced the ones on the roadster 30 years ago (the originals weren't that bad) and they are still as good as new. The one that came to me on the V8 are probably original, just slightly 'patinated' so I didn't bother replacing them. One pair is magnetic and the other not!
