MG MGB Technical - headlight failure
hello half way through a journey both headlights stopped working. the side lights are still working and the full beam works. i havent had a chance to look for the fault yet . if it was one headlight i would guess it was the bulb , but both at the same time? could anyone give me various things to check,..based on the fact that i am kind of new to this. all help gratefully received. thanks |

Exactly the same thing happened to me just a few weeks into my MG ownership. I took the opportunity to replace the old sealed beam units with Quadoptic halogen conversions and they've been fine for the next six years. Actually one got smashed by a stone this year - but the bulb still worked! |

Sorry, my last post wasn't much help because I left out the useful bit. The wires come through the wings just behind the radiator grill. There are three to each headlight. The black one is earth so leave that alone and swap the others. If the lights then come on when the switch is for dipped but not main-beam then you've proved that the switch and wiring are ok and problem really is the bulbs. Otherwise check the stalk switch internals for broken bits and if that's ok then work back down the wire from the headlights until you find the break. Don't forget to reconnect the wires correctly! |

One thing I would recommend is not to post the same query under both General and Technical subects. |
