MG MGB Technical - headlight hi lo switch
There is an old thread on this subject in the archives. I'd like to update it. I recently bought a new turn signal switch assembly for my 67 gt. It included a headlight flasher function that originally was only included on Euro models. (In the US we don't give advice and consent by blinking our lights) The wiring harness was ready to accamodate the new flash function. I purchased a VW headlight relay and turned it into a low/hi beam function and eliminated the foot switch. The vw part no is dni 0127. The Napa Echlin part no. is AR 284. The relay costs about $25. The voltage from the turn signal flasher clicks the relay to hi beam or back to low beam. At the foot switch is the power to the headlights. It is solid blue. The blue white and blue yellow wires go to either the hi beam or the low beam. These three wires are hooked to the relay. By a quick finger tip move of the flash lever you move to hi beam or to low beam. I had my first relay hanging down and it quit clicking and shorted the relay coil. I noted the same problem again with the second relay and discovered the relay needs to be case up and electrical contacts down to work reliably. The relay connector hook up is as follows: 30=ground, S=12 volt relay power from turn signal flasher switch, 56=12 volts to headlights from dash switch (blue), 56a = (blue white)hi beam and 56b = (blue red)low beam. (56 a and b might be reversed. It will work either way. Barry |
