MG MGB Technical - Hibernating fuel pump
Hi,guys So I parked my 79 at the beginning of November. Filled the tank, stabilizer included, drove for about 15 minutes or so,parked the car, disconnected the battery. Tried to start it this weekend. No clicking and no fuel to the filter on firewall. Is it true that I can smack it with a spanner and maybe loosen the contacts? Where on the pump should I try this? Thanx in advance |

It's true. Don't wail on it -- just a gentle tap tap anywhere on the body of the pump should do it (if it's going to work). If it doesn't get the pump going then it's probably time to open up the pump.... HTH! |

Want to hit it on the metal shell. The top of the pump where the points are is hollow plastic and could break. You can give it a pretty good whack, although it's best to use a rubber mallet. |

Turn on the ignition and simply give the fuel pump a couple of wacks with the head of a screwdriver. I'm not sure what sticks but I know it works! Good luck! Jim |

Michael - Try tapping the pump with a soft faced hammer or screwdriver handle on the clamp that holds the pump with the key in the on position. However, even if the pump works, you may get 10 feet, 10 miles or 10000 miles. My experience with these pumps is that once the points fail once, they are unreliable and you should plan on rebuilding the pump (not a bad job - just follow the manual) or purchase a new one. Jan |
