MG MGB Technical - Hologen Head Lamps
I got tired of outdriving my headlights so when one burned-out the other day I decided to replace them with a hologen lamp. I found and purchsed the units with the replaceable bulbs for $50 (kit included the bulbs). I'm very pleased with the result. However, I've discovered there is a 7" sealed hologen lamp for about $10 at most any parts store. That is the same price as the replaceable bulb. Is there a performance difference between these two option? If not, I could have saved some money with the sealed beam. Thanks in advance! Dennis |

Dennis: depends partly on the outputs. You are probably talking about Syvania sealed beams. They make 2: 60/40 and 65/55. The latter put out a nice beam and are much better than the weaker ones. If you bought the Wipac replaceable units, they are just as good if not better though I have no direct experience with them like I do with the Sylvanias. I have read good reports on them. |

If you want really, really bright headlights, try and score a set of Cibie or Hella e-code headlights that take H4 bulbs. If you wire them up with relays you will find greatly -- almost incredibly -- increased light output. I mean yeah the parts will run you $100-150 but good heavens you will have vastly increased light output. |
