MG MGB Technical - Hood catches (soft top catches)
Can anyone confirm that the hood catch needed for a grey pack away hood, is longer than a later type hood catch, if this is so, does any one know the part number, many thanks A.T |

The Parts catalogue quotes AHH6884 for car No. 101 to 38387, which was May 64, and AHA7709 (except for North America) after that. Clausager says the change was to improve the finger grip and commonise with midget and Sprite. The header rail didn't change part number between the pack-away and the early folding hood, so I can't see the catches being different. The header rail and the catches changed part number at 219001 which was the 71 model year and the Michelotti hood. |

Thank you for your reply, this morning I was in Liverpool at Prestige hoods having a new hood fitted, (which I am very pleased with, the hood and the fit) and the fitter told me that I have the wrong hood catches fitted, these he said are the same as the midget ones, you should have the longer ones fitted for this hood, because of the length you have more leverage and it makes them easier to close, A.T |

Just checked that part number AHH6884 and it gives that as Tonged clip, but I have found two part numbers for the over centre catches one is AHA7709 and the other is AHH9772, THERE IS £3.00 difference in the price, so hopefully I may be on the right track, A.T |

The Clausager info is verified by the Parts Catalogue and various online suppliers. Your fitter may well be correct in that the earlier catches were easier to operate being longer, so it's down to whether you want it 'easy' or 'correct'. AHH9772 was used from car number 219001 i.e. the 71 model year and the Michelotti hood as above. |
