MG MGB Technical - Horn Parts? Ideas?

There is a little plastic ring with a copper element attached that bolts to the back of the steering wheel boss. This element touches the steering column part of the circuit when the horn is depressed creating the circuit nd making the horns sound....

I have just discovered that the threads on mine have collapsed such that the horn does not work. I haven't tried many place yet admittedly, but those i have, want to charge me £32 for the whole boss assembly, just to get a replacement plastic part...

Any ideas where to get one from, without having to pay for the boss as well? If it makes any difference, the car i fitted with mota-lita type wheel, but i am not sure it i actually a mota-lita version.

Phil, I have a similar problem with a Mountney wheel, except there is nothing on the back of my boss! I have tried to use a wire through the boss onto the horn wire but it pulls apart when the wheel is turned onto full lock. Also occasionally the horn sounds when the wheel is turned! Can be embarrassing! If you get any more info please post it here.

Managed to get the horn boss ring from MGOC for £14 - much better than the original quote!!

I know what you mean. I have taken the cowl off the steering column while i sort this out and in its broken state, my horn ring will sound the horn on a right turn!!

There should be two small tapped holes at the base of teh boss either side of the nut to hold the steering wheel on. THe horn ring screws into these and when activated touches the a contact for the rest of the circuit.

I suppose there is a chance you do not have the correct boss fitted, but if you are sure then you could obtain one of these rings from MGOC and then drill/tap two holes at base of the boss for the ring to be afixed.

Geoff,
I've cured the horn push-custom wheel dillema on several cars by using the 1970 style turn signal switch with horn push on the stalk end. I recommend using the horn push to control a relay. Horns will be much louder, and the switch contacts should last forever. The wiring change is a no-brainer; just reroute 2 wires. It might take a few frantic attempts to find the horn when you need it most, but will become second nature in short order....
