MG MGB Technical - Hot floor boards

HI All, Does anyone have any ideas on how to cool the floor boards in my 71 mgb roadster. the header is right under my feet and it gets really HOT. Any ideas? Don Baker

I am also cooking my feet in host summer days so last year I add aluminum insulation padding from inside. It helps a bit but tunnel is still radiating so after few hours of driving is again hot like in hell (but still better than before). In July I bought heat shield from Moss that should drop few degrees more (http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=65445) but I dint find yet time to install it so can not repot if is any good or not. I think that you can make similar from sheet of aluminum for less money, but it will take time and without car lift is almost too difficult.

Toni,

I like the Moss-shield very much. Your suggestion to fabricate one from aluminum is doable but I think it wouldn't be as good as the Moss-shield.

Aluminum conducts heat very well, so in time the floor would heat up through radiation and conductivity. Stainless steel conducts heat less efficiently but radiates well...

So I think the "woven silica" material used by Moss should perform better.

Any shiny sheet spaced out from the boards by 1/2" or so should reduce heat transfer significantly. $100 seems a helluva a lot for something you could cut and bend to that shape. May not be *quite* as effective as the Moss sandwich, but it's certainly what I would be trying first.

I suspect this is the price you pay for having LHD cars - I don't have this problem on the right and my wife particularly likes having toasty feet on a journey.
Don't forget these cars were designed & built in the UK where it's cold most of the year, it was probably thought an unexpected bonus that this happens!

I know it gets a bad press but maybe a bit of exhaust wrap as well just here? I have never had a complaint of hot feet from passengers with TBH, maybe the LCB masnifold has something to do with that.

I melted the heel off my right shoe on a trip from Rome georgia to Tampa florida. I made an aluminum asbestos shield and installed it above the pipe. Much cooler.

Stan, I think the issues with exhaust wrap apply to its use on the manifold. I would not expect there to be a problem using it for a short length under the footwell.
