MG MGB Technical - HS 4 REBUILD KITS $$$$/????
Have a number of spare SU/HS4 carburetors drawered in my garage. When a running set starts to get a little sluggish and in need of a rebuild, I go to one of my renewed spare sets and do a quick exchange (takes about 15 minutes). Bought a number of rebuild kits about 15-20 years ago, but discovered this weekend that they were all gone. Took a trip to my local MG parts supplier today and was shocked at what they were offering as a rebuild kit. For $50 per carb, you get a cheap looking jet (no metering needle), needle valve & seat, float bowl gasket, carb/heat shield gaskets (2), carb/air cleaner gasket, about 3" of fuel line, fuel line to float bowl nut (with O-ring) and two or three washers. Don't remember who made the kits I bought in the past, but for less than $25, I got all of the above (with a better constructed jet) plus a metering needle, jet bearing components, float, float bowl grommet, piston spring, and damper. Left the rebuild kit on the counter and opted for a couple of packaged jets at $14 a piece. These came with a preconnected, wire-shielded fuel line with float bowl nut and O-ring. Metering needles were not included. Doing the math, it would appear that a needle valve & seat, four gaskets and a couple of washers go for about $36 - go figure. When I got home, I checked the VB catalog and they're offering the same rebuild kit at the same price. Anyone out there have a source for quality SU rebuild kits and/or components at reasonable prices? |

Steve - 15 or 20 years ago was befor inflation sent the prices of everything up and before the dolar took a nose dive against the pound. 15 to 20 years ago I could get fuel pump diaphragms for around $10.00 apiece - they now cost me somewhere on the order of $30.00. You might want to check with Burlen Fuel as to the price of their rebuild kits is and what is supplied with them. Burlen Fuel's web site is at: http://www.burlen.co.uk/ You may need to e-mail the request to them unless you know the part number for the kits. Good luck - Dave |

I don't know what he charges for rebuild kits, but Joe Curto is great for anything SU. He has a website. Regards, M.D. '57 MGA coupe |

If you are getting genuine SU parts from any supplier they will ultimately have come from Burlen, who own the SU brand now. That's not to say they will be the cheapest! In the UK Moss are currently (a little) cheaper for the identical kit that you can buy direct from Burlen. Be aware that there are two kits available. There is the rebuild kit and there is a service kit (about half the cost). Perhaps your were offered the service kit? Iain |

I purchased complete rebuild kits for my HIF carbs from SU Midel in Australia. After an email exchange concerning shipping and total cost, I ordered the kits and received them in less than 10 days, shipped via Post. Total cost was around $85 for two kits, as I recall. These kits included all the little bits, metering needles, jets, butterfly valves and shafts. By the way, they actually manufacture needles themselves. A very good and reasonable cost option. http://www.sumidel.com/ |

Thanks guys for the input. I have explored and bookmarked each of your suggestions. In addition, a link listed on another thread lead me to Advanced Performance Technology's web site (www.aptfast.com). Their pictured "Master Rebuild Kit, HS4 Pair," (#CRK254) is very close in content and quality to the kits I remember from the past. Spoke to several of the folks there and they seem like the kind of company I can do business with. Very friendly and helpful (with a 1-800 number). |
