MG MGB Technical - Hypothetical Wiring harness info.....??

Hypothetically....of course! I certainly have been around vehicles long enough to know better but for the sake of argument...If I were cutting out my rusty floor pans and happened to cut my harness in two... Where on the internet might I find wiring harness specifications? ie length, color and connection method of wiring. I know that original style blue wrapping tape can be purchased. I suppose I could always take the remnants of the old harness and get a pretty good idea. But a reciprocating saw can be a pretty destructive device,uh, hypothetically of course.

To get colors go to: http://www.mgbexperience.com/
Scroll down to; DIY/Service, then wiring diagrams and select your car model year wiring diagram. You can find the colors but not the lengths. I have never seen any reference to lengths of the wiring. That said they all go to the rear of the car and the length will vary dependent on what the specific wire is feeding. The fuel pump wires would be shorter than the left stop/tail/signal lights wiring. For additional information look at Rick Astley's web site at;

For electrical wiring supplies a good source is British Wiring at; http://www.britishwiring.com/
You can get replacement wiring looms or individual supplies for wiring repair or replacement from them. They have always been pleasant to deal with and their service is excellent. Of course all this is a hypothetical answer to your questions. Hope this helps and good luck. Clifton

I supose you could - hypothetically - just solder bullet connetors onto the cut ends of the loom and fit them back together - then you would be able to disconnect the two halves should you ever feel the need to saw your car in half.

Or, you could simply solder the wires back together using a little of the "shrink wrap" insulation on them. Les

And the old halves would give you the correct lengths - give or take a saw-width or so - colours and connection methods. Or is this a premature Lirpa Loof?

Since you've found me out, yes I did run a reciprocating saw through my wiring just aft of the right side crossmember. And although just splicing the wires back together did occured to me, I figured since the wiring is old and ratty (actually mouse chewed) anyway, I'd just make up a new sub-harness and re-wire the rear. That way I wouldn't add to the flickers by adding additional connections. Soldering would work, but I've convinced myself to re-wire because of other pre-existing problems.

I'd seen ready made harnesses for sale on the web and in VB and Moss, but they seemed VERY expensive to me, the cheapest person in Southwest Virginia. And due to my independent hillbilly heritage I live by the mantra, "I believe I can make that cheaper!"
How hard can it be, a few bullet con's, a few feet of wire (correctly colored and appropriate length), a little solder and chaf tape, and voila' no more blinky tail lights.
That's why I was asking for specifics. I was exploring my cheapness ortions.
Thanks for all input.

Correctly coloured wire and bullet cons will work out quite dear.

As the wire itself it usually OK and it is the connectors that corrode, why not just replace all the connectors and re wrap the loom?
Chris Betson

IME corrosion creeps down the conductor strands from the bullet connectors making soldering difficult and crimping unreliable. The rear harness is less than 40 quid here.
Paul Hunt

I find that a quick dip of the bared end in a salt/vinegar solution cleans the copper strands perfectly and makes soldering easy.
