MG MGB Technical - interesting clutch problem

On occasion when I engage my clutch I will feel a catch or a knock in the pedal. It feels almost like it is catches up by the top of the pedal or plunger where the reservoir is. Coming home this evening I shifted into 2nd and clutch pedal came back after I engaged it but the clutch didn’t engage. After pumping the pedal, the clutch engaged. I’m thinking that if I don’t address this soon it will only get worse. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks as always.. Tom BTW I just replaced my engine and when I did I replace the clutch and throw out bearing. I kept the old clutch slave cylinder it was working fine.

Paul Hunt helped me with this many years ago. The flexible hose to the slave cylinder deteriorates and clogs, sometimes with a flap that keeps the fluid from travelling back and releasing the clutch. Try replacing it.

Tom. As Mike notes, it is always a good idea to replace the flex hose any time the engine is out. Beyond that you have a possible catching piston in the slave cylinder, a possible bad bushing in the clutch fork (which fork holds the throwout bearing) or a master cylinder problem. The "two stage" clutch release would tend to argue for the flex hose, followed by the slave cylinder. The flex hose was not replaced when you replaced the clutch and the new throwout bearing is pushing the piston of the slave cylinder further back into the bore than the old throwout bearing did. If the bore of the slave cylinder is pitted the piston or seal may be catching. Les
