MG MGB Technical - Is Bigger really Better?

I use a HP-2004 filter on my 76B. The HP-3001 is identical in all dimensions to the HP-2004 filter recommended by K&N's application chart except with respect to height. The HP-3001 is more than 1.5" taller than the HP-2004. It stands to reason that it offers greater filtration capability due to the larger filter medium.

According to K&N the thread size and gasket diameter are identical to that of the HP-2004.

Will this bigger filter maximize the filtration of oil for engine longevit?

Since the filtration medium is identical, the two filters will stop particles down to the same minimum size, so there's no increase in protection. However, this also means that with the greater surface area of the larger filter maximum potential for airflow would be greater, so for high-RPM power or a modified deeper-breathing engine, such as a larger displacement engine, such as a 1950cc Big Bore, they are beneficial. You could also go longer between cleanings. The larger filters are a bit quieter at full throttle. I use the 3 1/4" model and the engine never seems to be afflicted with emphysema, despite the flowed head and the Piper 270 camshaft. The little 1 3/4" versions would never really feed it and let it develop its real potential.

Steve. Being a lawyer, clear communication is not something employed on a regular basis. RN did not mention that he is speaking of an oil filter, not an air filter for his carbs. The HP 2004 oil filter is a fairly short filter very similar in size to the Mann W-917, or just a little higher than the standpipe on the adapter is tall. This means that the oil, which comes in from the outside case area of the filter, flows through the filter to the standpipe and then goes into the engine stays in the filter when you shut the engine off. (Assumes that there is a good anti-drain back valve.) If, however, you use one of the taller filters, similar to the ones commonly used on Fords, the oil will drain out of the upper part of the filter--that portion above the height of the standpipe. This is why, when using an inverted type filter, a shorter filter is definitely better than a taller filter. You get oil pressure slightly sooner. Les

thanks all....you know, my wife always comments that i "start a conversation in the middle," while I knew I was referring to an oil filter (other than the mindreading Les) no one else knew....I'll stick with the HP-2002...oil...filter.

by the way, the K&N filter has a handy nut welded to its top to assist in removal...it's not cheap, but, the B is not a daily driver...rn

RN. Have you read "Anarchy and Elegance" by Chris Goodrich? Goodrich is also the one who wrote "Roadster" about building a Caterham 7 kit car. Both books are worth reading, especially the former as it is an account of his attending law school under a special program for journalists (you get a master's degree rather than a doctor of law degree). An excellent writer and both of his books are wide ranging and thought provoking. Les

Les, no, I haven't, but, I will see if I can pick up a copy of the second book. I usually stay away from books about law school. It's been over twenty years and besides the good friends (some still with us, others going on to the great beyond - they're on the bench), the parties, some really intelligent professors (few in number), I try hard to forget law school. While it was not a great experience, it was a necessary precondition to practicing law in Pennsylvania. Come to think of it, my wife is the only person I know who liked law school, and she hasn't practiced law in over thriteen years.

One my best friends from law school days is a former journalist. His perspective and attitude helped more than a few of us to get through that dark period.
