MG MGB Technical - Just a green wire?
In my newly acquired 77 B, Found a single green wire with a greenish blue protective cover over it going nowhere. Where should it connect? Also three wires ( white and white with stripes) in a three wire female connecter. Where does this connect? was looking at Rick Astley's page. Can't seem to find the circuit. Any help is appreciated. I'll guess that the single green wire goes to the induction heater for the original Z-S carb setup. You wouldn't notice adverse effects if this was disconnected. The three wire female connector is probably for the original OPUS electronic ignition. Most 77-on B's have been converted to aftermarket electronic ign. or points-type distributors. |

Perhaps you could say exactly where you found these wires? Given that there are green and white wires all over an MGB it can be quite hard to tell you what it would be for without knowing where it was from. Have you noticed any circuits not working properly lately? This is your first clue! Tell us more and you will get some answers i am sure! The bluish connector could be an aftermarket connector (blue denotes the wire gauge, but these types were not fitted as standard to a B). We would also need to know the colour of the stripes on the white cables. ~PHIL |

The green wire in question is in the same sub harness ,if you will, as the green wire that connects to the temperature well. it is a little heavier in guage and is protected with an outer sheath. appears to be some sort of protection. It leaves the harness just behind the alternater. The three wite wires are white, white/brown and white/black. They are run out of the main harness around the coil area. Run to a common three prong female plug connector. Hope this is a clearer picture. Ron the connection to the carb makes some sense hence the protective sheath to run across the front of the engine? Dan -- yes the green wire with the sheath definitely sounds like the carb induction heater. On my 79, the induction heater and temperature gauge wires share the same small subharness too. The three wires in the coil are are definitely for the old OPUS ignition, and are no longer needed (assuming the car is running!) |

Thanks Ron I think you hit it. Yes the car is running. Looks like to P.O. had some things changed. I guess all these wires will be redundant after The Weber carb and distributer with pertronix ignition get installed. Thanks again. Dan H. |
