MG MGB Technical - Just a Quick one

Hi Guys

I wonder if you could answer a couple of questions for me.

Basically I have a 74 Chrome Bumper GT, and I have just been donated a 79 model.

What I am wondering is, would the engine fit from a 79 to a 74 also would the gearbox fit?

What sort of work is needed to get the front wings to fit

Cheers in advance

"What I am wondering is, would the engine fit from a 79 to a 74 also would the gearbox fit?"

Yes, the engine will fit, but if the 74 car still has rectangle shaped engine mounts, rather than the round ones the 79 car has then these will need swapped. I think it is a case of switching the engine front plate from the 74 engine ontot the 79 engine as this will then allow the correct mounts to be fitted. The gearbox should fit fine, but if it is OD you will need to check it if it is the same LH Type. One has a blue plate and one a black plate. The only difference you need worry about is that they have different TPM numbers (Turns Per Mils) and so need a different speedo.

Fitting RB wings to CB is not that easy as they will need an extra section welded on to allow the indicators to be mounted. If this section is good on the 74 wing being replaced and you can weld this may be reasobably easy. I don't think there are other differences, but I'm not certain.

I don't know about Bs, but apparently the rubber-bumper midgets had a different profile to the wheelarch to allow for the taller ride-height.
The arch was effectively lower, so that the wheel didn't look lost!

Cheers guys ok last question

A MGB wing on a GT, Will it fit, of course I would need to weld up the holes for the screen but apart from that would it fit?

Cheers

I presume you mean a roadster wing?

The simple answer is no.

The profile is completely different where it meets the scuttle.

Rather than welding up the hole, you would need to cut a piece off it and make a flange, but it's not particularly straightforward.

Surely, plenty of cheap secondhand GT wings around?
